The Promise for Our Souls

How easy it is to be consumed with worries about finances or health or other worldly concerns. Do we allow those things to overshadow our spiritual health? I have been contemplating my own need to balance the responsibilities of this earthly life with the need to nourish my soul. I think it is easy to become distracted in our everyday lives and forget to feed our souls.

Another bit of good news from the promises Jesus passed along to us through St. Margaret Mary if we remain devoted to His Sacred Heart is His promise to nurture our spiritual well-being. He promised that (1) “Tepid souls shall become fervent.” and (2) “Fervent souls shall speedily rise to great perfection.” (Again: This link will take you to that page from the St. Margaret Mary parish in Algonquin, IL, that includes the twelve promises of Jesus for those who are dedicated to His Sacred Heart.)

I don’t know about you, but I could use His help in this area. In the Gospels, Jesus reminds us that God wants what is best for us, and that He will take care of us:

“Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?” (Matthew 6:26-30)

And yet, I still find it hard to just trust that everything will work out. I get completely distracted with worry at times. How great would it be to really trust in the Lord and set aside the constant worry? I so admire those of you who are able to do that. I pray that a renewed devotion to His Sacred Heart will allow me to rest in that comfort.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, teach us to turn to You with the worries of this world. Teach us to trust in Your care for us and to spread that good news.
