The Chosen – A Catholic Consideration

For each episode of The Chosen, I will share resources, including links to Catholic commentary. To be clear, I am a big fan of the series and hope that you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Toward the end of the COVID shutdown, I participated in a Catholic discussion group on The Chosen using Zoom. Then in the fall of 2023, I started facilitating a similar group, but in person, at my parish. To prepare, I gathered information about each episode, which I later shared with my participants. I will post links those notes below.

Watch episodes: click here for the free site where you can watch episodes of The Chosen online.

Character Slide Show: I have spoken with a lot of people who struggle to keep track of who is who while watching The Chosen. Click here for a simple slide show with a slide for each of the main characters containing the actor’s name, character name, and a photo. I hope it helps.

Catholic Commentaries: here is a link to the Catholic commentaries that I reviewed to prepare for the group at my parish.

Roundtable Discussions: You might also like the roundtable discussions (found here) with the creators of The Chosen and their panel, including a Messianic Rabbi, an Evangelical Minister, and a Catholic Priest (who in season two was Bishop Robert Baron).

Use the links below, organized by Season, to get to my episode notes. For each episode, I prepared a document that starts with possible discussion questions. (You can use these questions for your own small group discussions or as journal prompts.) Then you will find Relevant Passages from Scripture, which I copied from the USCCB Bible website. Next, I included my notes from the Catholic Commentary videos, and finally a section with links relevant to the episode.

Margie

I am a cradle Catholic with 12 years of Catholic school education. I am married and have two grown children, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and two grandsons. I have been a high school mathematics teacher since 1996, and enjoyed being active in the mathematics education community in Ohio. Now I am excited to focus my spare time on growing in faith. I have already learned so much by studying some of our female saints, and I can't wait to see where this will take me!
