With the example of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, we have a perfect model for the spirit of Thanksgiving. In this country, we have this one day set aside each year to gather together and share a festive meal while focusing on our many blessings. How better to really appreciate what we have than to take a little time to think about those who are not as lucky. That is the example of St. Elizabeth.
Fortunately, as this holiday approaches, there are lots of opportunities to contribute to the needs of the poorer members of our communities. Most of us will run into a food drive someplace during the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. This gives us that opportunity to work together to make a difference for those who need us. Because really, we can’t all afford to give away as much food as St. Elizabeth was able to give. Presumably, most of us do not have the resources of a royal family.
I know there are some families who also go and work at food pantries and homeless shelters on Thanksgiving. What a wonderful gesture of love and support for the least of our brothers.
Some of us will also make it to mass on Thanksgiving. Let’s remember to pray for all of those who are lonely or poor or maybe missing family members on this holiday. I will be praying for all of you, too. I am so thankful for everyone who has decided to join me on this journey!
Dear God, we come to you today full of gratitude for the many blessings You have given us. Thank you especially for those moments that we are able to share with our families and friends. Thank You for the wonderful food that we will share on this special holiday. And thank You for the gift of Your grace to follow the path You laid out for us. Please send special blessings to all those who need You most, and guide us to be Your servants when You need us to spread Your love.
